<p>Following inadvertently costing The Undertaker the WWE Title at SummerSlam, Shawn Michaels was defiant and attacked The Dead Man as opposed to making an earnest apology. This would lead to the pair facing each other in the main event of this show in what would be their first ever televised singles encounter. Underneath, Bret Hart's anti-American rhetoric had raised the ire of former WCW midcard wrestler, The Patriot who, after having beaten Hart shortly before Hart won the title, was now challenging the Hitman here.
