We read in this chapter about the first day on tying he road with the Tillerman children. The author goes to great lengths to help us picture the four children and understand the reality of their situation. We especially come to see the role Dicey is playing in the survival of the children. Dicey is marshalling all their physical and emotional resources as well as the financial resources she needs to survive, she thinks, until they get to the home of rich Aunt Cilla. By the end of the chapter, Dicey understands their journey will take them longer than a few days and she is troubled by how she will see to it that they all survive. She leads them down a dead end road which is headed towards a beach and they take shelter on the verandah of a deserted country house.
