The atonement was foreordained by God. We read in Revelation 13:8 that Jesus was slain “from the foundation of the world.” God, in His foreknowledge, was fully aware that Adam and Eve eventually would sin, and made provision for the redemption of fallen humanity. Before the world was created, Christ understood that He would take upon Himself the disobedience and rebellion of humanity, thus providing an atonement (doing what was necessary to reconcile two alienated parties: God and us) for sin.
