Water, Water Everywhere…But Is There Enough to Drink?

When a fan asks about whether there’s enough clean water, and if not, can we make what we need, the StarTalk All-Stars give both cosmic and terrestrial answers. Host and cosmochemist Natalie Starkey describes the challenges with getting water as we explore Mars and the solar system. When it comes to water here on Earth, she explains that we have enough – the problem is making our dirty or salty water clean and fresh, and guest astrophysicist Lindy Elkins-Tanton describes how much fun she had learning to “make” water through chemistry. But it’s not until co-host Chuck Nice asks if we could pollute our planet so much that we run out of water that things get scary, when Lindy tells him how much of our water we get from aquifers, which are mostly unexplored, unregulated, and unprotected.
