UHL Pathologist Urges Clare Women To Ditch Stigma Around Breast Cancer

A pathologist at the region's main hospital is reminding women in Clare that breast cancer isn't necessarily the cause for concern that it's been in the past. One in nine women will receive a breast cancer diagnosis in their lifetime and symptoms include breast or under-arm lumps, abnormal skin changes, discharge and unusual pain. With almost one quarter of women diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, campaigners are urging women this Breast Cancer Awareness Month to seek early detection if they notice any symptoms. Consultant breast pathologist at University Hospital Limerick's Symptomatic Breast Unit, Dr Máire Lavelle, says while the illness had a lower survival rate in the past, it's largely treatable once it's identified early.
