On this episode of the PTP our guest is Dr. Karyne Messina, Ed.D. Dr. Messina is a clinical psychologist and Supervising and Training Analyst at the Washington Baltimore Center for Psychoanalysis and is on the medical staff of Johns Hopkins Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. She maintains a full-time private practice in Chevy Chase, Maryland. <br /><br />Dr. Messina the author of several books, including Misogyny, Projective Identification, and Mentalization, and, Aftermath: Healing from the Trump Presidency. Today she is here to discuss her new book, Resurgence of Global Populism: A Psychoanalytic Study of Projective Identification, Blame-Shifting, and the Corruption of Democracy, from Routledge Press. <br /><br />Dr. Messina discusses the phenomenon of authoritarian leaders across the globe, in Hungary, the UK, Poland, New Zealand and Australia, the USA and other nations. Dr. Messina takes a psychoanalytic approach to the process of splitting, and projective identification, as well as blame shifting that these leaders utilize to manipulate public opinion and to exploit fear and weakness in their followers.
