Capitalism has exhausted its potential. Professional economists such as Paul Craig Roberts and Michael Hudson have argued for this idea through the idea of a “financialized economy.” This refers to a system where financial instruments are the only engine of profit. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Production of new assets has been abandoned in favor of debt service, interest rates and currency speculation –&nbsp; all non-productive entities. In fact, this is hardly an “economy” at all, since it produces nothing. </span></p><p><span style="font-family: verdana;">Since the average household today is under water financially, the diversion of resources to pay creditors means almost nothing is left for actual production.
