The Gilded Age And What's Making Us Happy

With HBO's <em>The Gilded Age</em>, Julian Fellowes airlifts <em>Downton Abbey</em>'s soapy plots, its baubles and ball gowns, its sneering servants and quippy old ladies out of Yorkshire and plops them down on the in 1882 Manhattan. The series stars Carrie Coon, Christine Baranski, and Cynthia Nixon, plus a sprawling cast of socialites, servants, and members of the working class.
