Shortage of healthcare workers hits Niger

<p>Stakeholders in the healthcare sector in Niger State have expressed concern over the shortage of personnel to man the primary and secondary healthcare facilities.</p>, <p>The Guardian checks in Minna, the state capital, revealed that the facilities were under-staffed; hence, the need for more hands to enhance service delivery.</p>, <p>Provost of Niger State College of Nursing Sciences, Aisha Maikudi, told The Guardian that shortage of manpower in the healthcare sector “is worrisome and calls for intervention.”</p>, <p>Maikudi disclosed that experienced medical personnel were retiring from the service, and those still in service, mostly women, were ageing.</p>, <p>“Our male counterparts in the medical profession are leaving the sector for greener pastures. We need urgent replacements,” she said.</p>, <p>Government, she added, can employ young nurses to replace the retiring ones. The Provost lauded Governor Mohammed Bago for his commitment to improve the healthcare sector, which would go a long way in providing an enabling environment for the personnel.</p>
