This was, according to what sources we have been able to find, not a misspelling, but a deliberate means by the author of obfuscating the SCP's connection to SCP-073 ("Cain"). The cast and a majority of our patrons prefer to instead highlight this connection by making their names match the characters they are loosely based on (the brothers Cain and Abel in the story of the First Murder in Genesis).
