The leading men of the Church were in prison or dodging persecution. President John Taylor spent most of his time as president of the Church living in the underground to avoid imprisonment. In the deepest of these sufferings the Lord was mindful of His people, and He bestowed upon them light and revelation for their comfort and encouragement. A few of many revelations received during this time were recorded in journals, on scraps of papers, or published in European editions of the Doctrine and Covenants. Those printed here are subject to controversy because of the manner in which they were recorded or printed. What little documentation has been available is included in the Notes following each revelation. The reader must read these revelations in the light of apocryphal works–enlightened or benefited by whatever inspiration he can derive therefrom.
