RE-RUN: Tangling the Tree of Life

<p>Today we’re replaying of our discussion with science writer <a href="https://www.davidquammen.com/">David Quamme</a>n.</p> <p>We <a href="https://anchor.fm/bigbiology/episodes/Ep-10-Tangling-the-Tree-of-Life-eakt1v">talked with him in 2018</a> about his most recent book, the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Tangled-Tree-Radical-History-Life/dp/1476776628">Tangled Tree</a>, which explores the influence of horizontal gene transfer on the evolution of life on Earth.</p> <p>But right now, it’s one of his previous books that is essential reading. In 2012, he published a book called <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Spillover-Animal-Infections-Human-Pandemic/dp/0393346617/ref=pd_lpo_14_t_1/132-2465507-3878628?_encoding=UTF8&amp;pd_rd_i=0393346617&amp;pd_rd_r=9044e518-c846-4006-9f61-a1028693e3dc&amp;pd_rd_w=AKH7n&amp;pd_rd_wg=aoiqx&amp;pf_rd_p=7b36d496-f366-4631-94d3-61b87b52511b&amp;pf_rd_r=SM495BER96KN40XP2AZ7&amp;psc=1&amp;refRID=SM495BER96KN40XP2AZ7">Spillover</a> that described the risk of new diseases jumping from wildlife to humans. Now, we’re seeing that scenario play out in a big way with the coronavirus pandemic.</p> <p>In May, he wrote an article in the <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2020/05/11/why-werent-we-ready-for-the-coronavirus">New Yorker</a> arguing that the U.S. has one of the worse coronavirus outbreaks in the world because it failed to learn from previous pandemics.
