#RamadanCountdown One of the most beautiful lessons we learn in Islam is that the human heart should always be between two essential emotions: hope (raja) and fear (khawf). This balance is especially important in our fasting. We fast with hope that our fast is accepted and that we’ve done our best, while also carrying a sense of fear that perhaps we could have done better, knowing that tomorrow is another opportunity to strive for excellence. It’s like the wings of a bird: without both wings, the bird cannot fly. Hope and fear—these two emotions are what sustain us on our journey. 🌿 So, how do we embody this balance during Ramadan? How do we truly reap the full blessings of this month? Let’s look at Imam al-Ghazali’s understanding of the human psyche, which is far beyond modern psychology in its depth. As a psychiatrist, I am constantly amazed by his framework of the human condition. This framework is the same one we use at the Khalil Center and in our Muslim mental health and well-being program at Stanford University. It integrates Islamic psychotherapeutic care with professional counseling, offering a holistic approach to healing. As we reflect this Ramadan, let’s strive to balance hope and fear in our fasts, and approach our spiritual growth with the wisdom of our traditions.
