QUEEN CHRISTINA OF SWEDEN AND THE MARQUIS MONALDESCHI

Maybe not a great love story but definitely a good history lesson. She was King Gustavus's choice and hope to be his successor, and he therefore raised her like a son. At age 18, upon his death, she became the ruler of Sweden, which was then a very powerful country- and she did a remarkable job. She was intelligent, statesman-like, and respected- until she came in contact with the wrong people, lost her desire to rule as well as her respect for her country, and abdicated the throne to her cousin. Her love life was a mess. She was unfaithful to the one man who truly loved her, he reacted, and she had him put to death while she was a guest in another country.
