PFT #47 - Personal Finance Tip of the Week: How to Benefit By Knowing Store Return Policies with Retailers

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This week’s topic is about knowing store policies when returning expensive or custom made products with retailers. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">For example, you can purchase exercise equipment or mattresses and they make it clear that you can return an item within 90-120 days; no questions asked. With that being said, not all companies work the same. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Just recently I purchased a piece of furniture that cost $2,000 which took over three months to have it made and delivered.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As soon as the family sat on it we realized that it was not going to suit our needs. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">So naturally we went to the retailer's website and the policy stated that they do not return items unless they are defective; however, I said why not call them anyway? </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Upon talking to them they were very helpful; we explained the situation and they gave us a full refund. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Moreover, they said if we ordered from them again they’d waive that delivery fee as well. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">One week later we purchased a new sofa. In fact, they also waived the delivery fee and gave us a store credit because we paid for the product in full. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The bottom line is that you should understand all policies before purchasing especially large ticket items.  </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In our case, we would have accepted their terms without question; we just gave it a shot and got lucky.
