NJ now requires licenses for police

Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill Thursday that requires police officers in New Jersey to be licensed. WNYC’s Nancy Solomon reports it's something 46 other states already require.<br />Now, any police officer who engages in misconduct will lose their certification, and State Attorney General Matt Platkin says that’s a game changer.<br />"Those who fail to meet the essential standards of professionalism not only lose their jobs, but can't simply obtain a new badge in a new department, in a new city, or even perhaps in a different state," Platkin says.<br />The licensing bill was hailed by Amol Sinha of the ACLU, but he says New Jersey still doesn't do enough to identify problem cops.<br />"Here too New Jersey lags behind, among the few states that keep police disciplinary records hidden from the public," Sinha says.<br />Sinha also wants subpoena power for civilian review boards.
