Welcome to episode 48 [originally broadcast on Wednesday 5 May 2021] of #mhTV​​​​​​​​​​​​​. In this episode of #mhTV​​​​​, Nicky Lambert and Dave Munday speak with guests Simon Arday and Dan Brown about learning from the other side. Simon is a registered mental health nurse who has spent most of his working life providing mental health care in a number of different settings. He has a background in acute psychiatric care, liaison psychiatry, and nursing education and development with specific interests in enhancing parity of esteem between mental and physical health. He is currently working as a Specialist Renal Mental Health Nurse at King's College Hospital, and Senior Lecturer in Parity of Esteem at University of Roehampton. Dan has worked in healthcare since around 2000, predominantly learning his trade at South West London and St George’s MH Trust. Working in acute MH care as an HCA. He started his pre-registration nurse training at Kingston University 2002, whilst continuing to work part time for the Trust on a variety of Acute inpatient units. Once registered Dan spent a further year in acute MH care and then specialised in eating disorders, including post-graduate training in Systemic Therapy. With 8 years’ experience as a nurse specialist in adult eating disorders, Dan undertook an NIHR funded master’s degree in clinical research, focusing on ‘Severe and Enduring Anorexia Nervosa’ (SEED) crisis interventions. Between 2017 and 2020 Dan has worked in Nurse Development and student experience, as well as developing innovative ‘parity of esteem’ related training courses with his colleagues. 2018 onwards Dan has worked closely with the Acute Trust ‘St George’s University Hospitals Trust’ and in December 2020 took the full time role of Head of Nursing for Mental Health, helping to guide policy and delivery of services to be inclusive and supporting of all, especially in relation to Parity of Esteem and mental health.
