Description

Preclinical and epidemiological studies have shown an association between acidosis and the progression of chronic kidney disease. Emerging evidence suggests that bicarbonate treatment may slow the progression of CKD and reduce the risk of kidney failure. Nephrologist Nilufar Mohebbi, Fresenius Medical Care’s Chief Medical Director for Switzerland, is investigating the effect of alkali therapy on graft function in kidney transplant recipients with metabolic acidosis. The goal is to extend the life of transplanted organs in renal patients.
