Description

Continuing in our series on the Gospel of Matthew

We are coming to the close of the Sermon on the Mount. A couple of weeks ago, we looked at the fact that Jesus wraps up this important teaching by contrasting sets of two opposites. We’ve looked at two gates, two paths, two destinations, two groups travelling. We’ve discussed two trees, with two kinds of fruit, and how to identify false teachers, the bad trees, by the bad fruit they produce. Next week, Chris will close off the Sermon on the Mount by contrasting two builders building on two different foundations.

Today, we will also be considering two contrasting sets; we will be looking at two different groups on the day of judgment. It is important to keep in mind that verses 13-29 are really a continuum, rather than four isolated segments; they are all interconnected and flow together. So it is essential that you keep the main pictures — the two gates, narrow and wide, the two ways, hard and easy, the two destinations, destruction and life, and the two groups, the many and the few — that you keep the main pictures clearly at the forefront of your mind as we look at each of these following portions.
