Gade served in the Army for more than 25 years. After enlisting in 1992, he graduated from West Point in 1997 and was commissioned as an Armor officer. He was wounded in action twice in Iraq while serving as a tank company commander. He earned an MPA and PhD from the University of Georgia, and served in the White House Domestic Policy Council under President Bush. While on active duty, he was the co-founder of a major experiment in incentivizing veteran transition (The Independence Project) and served on various VA boards and commissions, including the Advisory Committee on Disability Compensation. After retiring from the Army in 2017, he was an appointee at the US Department of Labor’s Veterans Employment and Training Service (VETS) and professor at American University.
