Description

Jesus came to a tax-collector's booth. Matthew, a tax-collector was sitting there. He was busy at work collecting taxes for the Romans. The Romans ruled over the Jews. Matthew was Jewish but because he worked for the Romans, he was not trusted or liked by his own people. Jesus said, "Follow me" to him. Matthew got up, left everything behind and followed Jesus. Matthew wanted to throw a banquet to honour Jesus. He invited Jesus and his disciples to his home for dinner. He also invited other tax collectors and other outcasts of society. The religious leaders were shocked to see Jesus in such bad company. They complained to the disciples saying, "Why do you defile yourselves by eating and drinking with those people."
