Jesus lived in a day when people practiced reciprocity, meaning if someone blessed you, you would bless them in return or if someone cursed or injured you, you would do the same to them. That was also a time where average citizens felt disempowered, vulnerable, and exposed because the wealthy and powerful did not follow the same standards as everyone else. It was into this context that Jesus inserted the Kingdom of God, which invited people, irrespective of their position, to reach for something higher than retaliation and justice, and to bless those who would do them harm.
