I Can Only Do Me

Description

This episode is an interview with Hazel Urquhart a woman who left school early and went to work in a paintbrush factory to earn money to help out her family, ended up running art therapy workshops and a non-profit organization and now, at an age when people traditionally would have thought of retiring, she has published a book called The Art of You: Self Discovery Through Art. Listen as she discusses the experiences that encouraged her to create her book and as I coach her through some ways to market and further her work.

Trigger Warning: Hazel talks a little bit about her work with organizations for women who dealt with sexual abuse and also briefly discusses a personal experience with a possible suicide. These experiences contributed greatly to the creation of her book and, although I could have deleted them from the interview, they are indicative of the person Hazel is and the journey she took, and I felt her story would have been missing a substantial piece. You can begin listening at 17 minutes if you would like to hear about Hazel’s book and how she put it together, our discussion on ways to market it and what she’s doing next.

Key Points:

The Beginnings: Paint brushes, volunteering and art groups (3)

The Department of Human Potential (6:21)

What Do You Want to Do With Your Life? (8:47)

The Workshop Years (12)

The Book and Help from a Local Grant (20:54)

Ideal Customer & Marketing (24)

Imposter Syndrome (26:36)

Validation of Hazel's Work (31:36)

Officially Going to be a Pensioner: Advice on workshops (38:10)

A Pretty Determined Woman (42:24)

Best Advice from a Counsellor (49:20)

<strong
