How to Use Backer Rod and Caulk Wide Cracks | Tips

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Caulk not only improves the appearance of a paint job, it also seals out moisture and drafts. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">But sometimes caulk joints fail because the crack they cover is too wide. If a gap is more than a quarter inch wide  you'll want to first fill the void with a product called “backer rod.” This material is essentially a roll of foam rubber rope that's available in several diameters. You force the rod into the gap with a putty knife and push it down just below the surface. Then apply the caulk on top of the backer rod to completely seal the gap. </span></p>
