A victory by trans athlete Lia Thomas at an American university swimming competition in March has sparked a furore that's now contributed to the sport's peak international body restricting transgender competitors. This week, FINA effectively banned transgender women from the highest levels of competition, just as the world championships were getting underway in Budapest.
