How is Shakespeare Still Relevant in Today's Theatre?

How can 450 year-old plays still have meaning in the theatre today? Charlie Dupré tells us how Shakespeare has hugely influenced his practice as a playwright, actor and spoken word artist. Charlie is from London, currently based in Berlin, and has taken multiple shows to Edinburgh Fringe Festival including 'The Stories of Shakey P' which re-imagined Shakespeare as a playground battle rapper, and 'Macblair' which told the story of Tony Blair as a Macbeth-style tragicomedy. It played the Brighton and Edinburgh Fringes to critical success, and Charlie tells us all about his experience taking his independent shows to these festivals and shares some amazing practical tips of things he’s learnt along the way. In the last couple of years Charlie has moved away from pursuing an acting career to discovering a love of playwriting. In this episode we talk about the importance of staying open to trying new things and how your path will reveal itself. We also talk about Charlie’s love of Shakespeare and reinventing his stories and plays with a current and topical twist, how theatre can be an amazing space to open discussion about politics and other important issues (especially in today’s polarised climate), and we also get a special performance of some excerpts from his plays and some wonderful spoken word!
