Hosting At-Risk Scholars with Dr. Keith Watenpaugh and Dr. Jane Newman

<p>David Lloyd and Hamoud Salhi host this show, dedicated to hosting at-risk scholars, and especially scholars from Afghanistan at this critical time.&nbsp;We turn to the plight of Afghan refugees, both those who did manage to exit and those who have been internally displaced or are in hiding due to the nature of their work and their opposition to the fundamentalist mores of the Taliban and the restrictions they have already begun to impose on Afghan civil society, and in particular on women. We focus especially on Afghan scholars and teachers whose work in forwarding the education of Afghans has always been a crucial element in Afghan society, long before the US-NATO occupation. Our guests are Professors Keith Watenpaugh of the University of California Davis and Jane Newman of the University of California Irvine.</p> <p><strong>Keith Watenpaugh</strong>&nbsp;is a leading American historian of the contemporary Middle East, Human Rights&nbsp;and modern humanitarianism at UC Davis. He is an expert on Genocide&nbsp;and its denial, and the role of the&nbsp;<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refugee" target="_blank">r</a>efugee and displaced peoples&nbsp;in world history. Watenpaugh is the founding director of the Human Rights Studies Program at Davis.&nbsp;Of particular interest is his role in developing the <a href="http://article26backpack.ucdavis.edu/" target="_blank">Article 26 Backpack</a>™ -&nbsp;The Universal Human Rights Tool for Academic Mobility.
