Government Urged To Prioritise Local Development In Shannon Estuary Before Exporting Renewables

A West Clare Councillor is calling on the government to focus on securing the future of local communities rather than quick profits. Although the Shannon Estaury Economic Taskforce has estimated that 10,000 jobs will be created in the region by 2035, fears are growing among elected representatives over the lack of clarity on the implementation of the plan. Currently over 300 people in Kilrush are deemed to be living in an extremely deprived area, while the town also holds the third highest commercial vacancy rate in the province at 24.5%. Cathaoirleach of the West Clare Municipal District and Independent Councillor Ian Lynch says the state must capitalise on the opportunities for the area.
