They thought they didn't need God...until they got into trouble, that is! God showed them time and time again that THEY NEEDED HIM! And not the other way around! Old Testament Scriptures have a wealth of hard-learned lessons about the consequence of when a faithless people DEFY the commands of their true God! Who refuses to listen even though He sent His servants, the prophets, to repeatedly say to them: "let every one of you turn from his evil way" and repent! So in Jeremiah, chapter 35, we see this account of the Rechabites' honor and obedience to the commands of their forefathers, in stark contrast to Israel's disobedience to their God, who is worthy of greater praise and WORTHY of greater honor! And yet, they failed to submit! And unfortunately, in the 21st century, we see the Church not obeying and faithfully following the commands of the Father nor of the Son either! You see, the problem is...the Church still wants to be partners with this "world" and make provision for their flesh; although, we were given the command, "Do not love this world nor the things in the world," and "reject all ungodliness" and sensuality! We must do better Church! We must obey and remain faithful to our God and Savior. Lest we forget Jesus' somber words to the deceived feigned "follower," "I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity” (Matthew 7:23). Jesus is not breaking off the relationship here—there was never a relationship to break off!
