EPL: ‘Totally classless’ – Michael Owen slams Arsenal for backing Arteta’s comments

<p>Former Liverpool striker, Michael Owen has slammed Arsenal for their ‘totally classless’ statement supporting manager Mikel Arteta’s strong criticism of refereeing decisions in their Premier League 1-0 defeat to Newcastle on Saturday.</p>, <p>Arsenal were beaten by Newcastle at St. James’ Park following a controversial Anthony Gordon goal.</p>, <p>Gordon’s winning goal was given after three separate VAR checks.</p>, <p>But Arteta was left fuming, branding the decision an ‘embarrassment’ and a ‘disgrace’ after the game.</p>, <p>Arsenal later issued a statement on Sunday backing up Arteta’s comments.</p>, <p>However, Owen has hit out at Arsenal over their statement.</p>, <p>“The Newcastle United v Arsenal game yesterday was a brilliant watch. Two top teams going at it,” Owen tweeted.</p>, <p>‘The only (in his words) “embarrassing” and “disgraceful” thing about it was Arteta’s behaviour. A common occurrence that damages the game more than any incorrect decision.</p>, <p>“For his club to now release a statement moaning about the standard of officiating is poor and, sadly for a team of Arsenal’s standing, totally classless.”</p>
