Sturgeon’s music wrestles issues of colonialism, disenfranchisement, and the disconnection amongst generations of Indigenous people from their communities, languages, land, and identities. These issues are important to Sturgeon, whose grandfather, was required to give up his Anishinaabe roots to provide a better life for himself and his family. In doing so he was defined as “non-status” a term he has embraced in his moniker.
