Episode 24: What did they read on the frontier?

Discover all the various items that the pioneers read. They were entertained and enriched with dime novels, books from Jack London, Mark Twain, and Willa Cather. They thumbed through Frank Leslie’s publications, Harper’s Weekly, Ladies’ Home Journal, and Scribner. Local newspapers and business periodicals were also enjoyed and studied. Probably the number one book read was the Bible and we forgot to mention that in the show!</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>This show's lagniappe:</strong></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Escalloped Tomatoes</strong></p> <p>1 pint fresh tomatoes, peeled and chopped</p> <p>1 teaspoon salt</p> <p>1 teaspoon pepper, freshly ground black</p> <p>3 tablespoons butter, melted</p> <p>1 teaspoon sugar</p> <p>½ pint bread crumbs, grated</p> <p> </p> <p>Mix tomatoes, salt, and pepper, sugar, and two tablespoons of the butter and pour into a baking dish. Sprinkle the bread crumbs over the mixture and drizzle with the remaining butter.
