<p><em>Carmilla</em> is a double-whammy: an English-language vampire novel that predates <em>Dracula</em> by nearly three decades, and an edit from Carmen Maria Machado that both underlines the story's gay subtext <em>and</em> has a bit of fun with readers while doing it.
