Diet 101: the truth about low carb diets, by Jenny Ruhl. Book review by Ford Brewer MD MPH

Description

Diet 101 is a companion book to Blood Sugar 101, but Jenny Ruhl. She's the founder of the award-winning website Blood Sugar 101. Like Blood Sugar 101, this is a very well-researched book. And it also was written for diabetics. However, the information provided is important for all of us. And it's not just for diets and weight loss. It's also for the Type 2 diabetes pandemic. She does an excellent review of the new studies coming out over the past few years re: studies of diets using stronger scientific techniques. Actually, diets routinely don't do well. Here's why; people don't stick with them. 6-month follow-up for almost all diet studies has been abysmal. Low carb diets have shown marginal improvement. Do ketogenic diets have a metabolic advantage? Yes, but you can't eat 7000 calories per day. Jenny's a proponent of low-carb diets, especially for diabetics and prediabetics. But she fairly reports problems and shortcomings, like grumpy moods, quick loss of improvement when carbs are re-introduced, failure to prevent or cure diabetes or prediabetes.

For more information, contact us at 859-721-1414 or myhealth@prevmedheartrisk.com.
