<p>Air Date: 09 29 21</p> <p>Despair and a Ministering Angel, 1 Kings 19:4–10</p> <p>A new dispensation of the miracle of the mountain and where God is continues the story of Elijah and Elisha.</p> <p>The fugitive is on the run, because the crown is playing hardball (19:4–10). As those entrenched in power often do, Ahab and Jezebel will stop at nothing to protect themselves and their advantage. But of course, Elijah himself is not naive (innocent), for he also has engaged in terrorist politics. For that reason, he must run. The wilderness to which he flees is beyond the control of the crown. But of course, it is also a place of risk, for there are none of the usual life supports. Such a circumstance of wilderness risk, to be sure, is no new venture for Elijah (see 17:1–7). He arrives in the wilderness completely spent. He has mustered enormous energy for the dispute at Carmel. And though he has won, he is permitted no chance of exultation. His wish-prayer of v. 4 is for death. He is distressed and dismayed. And then he sleeps. He has no energy for anything else.
