Description

A Clare Sinn Féin representative claims Ireland is in a "perfect capitalist storm" due to over-reliance on the private rental market. It comes as Ennis has this week been designated a rent pressure zone, which means that rent increases on private rental tenancies, both existing and those being re-let on the market, cannot exceed 2% a year. The Residential Tenancies Board's latest report show the average cost of renting in the county has increased from €920 between January and March of last year to €1,074 this year, representing a 17% rise. Clare Social Housing Committee member Tommy Guilfoyle says the housing crisis has got to this stage due a governmental failure to adequately provide social housing in favour of dependence on private landlords.
