Abstract If a compact Lie group G acts freely on a manifold X, the resulting orbit space X/G is itself a manifold. This text is concerned with the existence of such actions as well as the cohomological classification of the respective orbit spaces by using some known tools of equivariant cohomology theory and spectral sequences.
