Boundaries are a weird, weird thing. They come in very surprising forms and they are so personal. As we get older and more experienced, I think many of us start realizing that energy is the hottest of commodities and the reservation of its expenditure becomes vital. With this, we get more efficient at identifying boundaries and implementing them, saving our future-selves some precious energy. In BDSM and in life, there’s always a lot to process, whether it’s old, new or on the horizon. The old sayings “Time heals all wounds” and “Good fences make good neighbours” come to mind. Time, space and little apathy go a long way in the preservation of energy and the sustainability of relationships in the long term. I’ve recently discovered a new gear that I like to call ‘boyfriend mode’, like airplane mode but for people, specifically, for me. In trying to do my very best for people, I’ve been under the false assumption that giving 100% is always the best choice. Well, like many things in BDSM play and life in general, there is rarely a one-size-fits-all solution for anything. It’s not about being right or wrong, it’s about being appropriate. Identifying what is needed in each situation and doing that. In the audio, I talk about emotionally low maintenance versus high maintenance relationships. I peep on some patterns in male friendships and take some pages from that book. Keeping things light and distant is just what the doctor ordered, sometimes. It’s a mode like any other, something in the tool kit to bust out when appropriate and it’s been a favourite of mine this past year. I also talk about balancing ‘boyfriend mode’ with maintaining a level of openness. We can’t be all things to all people but we can choose our favourite things and people and stay open in those areas.
