Born in Wales to Norwegian immigrant parents, the 6’6” Dahl was larger than life in every imaginable way. A veteran of the Royal Air Force (RAF,) Dahl crash-landed his Gladiator in Marsa Matruh, Egypt, in 1940 and managed to crawl to safety before it blew up.
