They were made with knitted gray wool jersey pants.  In 1926, the American clothing manufacturer Russell Athletic reinvented the sweatpants’ material by replacing the wool jersey with soft, comfortable cotton.  until the 1980's sweatpants were mostly confined to gyms and university campuses. The introduction of social media in the 21 century took athletic wear to new heights as their classic looks became associated with fitness, casualness, and a laid-back attitude. </p>
