It's been a 24/7 job...and it's the smallest of the 5 armed services that protect these great united states. since 1790, the U.S. Coast Guard has kept the nation’s waterways safe, playing a critical role in national security. The U.S. Coast Guard patrols our coasts for drug smugglers, human trafficking and both domestic and international terrorism. Something you may not know: During peacetime it is part of the Department of Homeland Security; however during wartime, it becomes part of the Department of Defense and is included in the Department of the Navy.</p>
