Modern day suspenders were invented in 1820 by Albert Thurston...50 years later, in 1871...the notable and notorious Samuel Clemens, known almost universally as ‘Mark Twain’ to us modern folks, finally got a patent for these universally worn garments. Suspenders lost some popularity following World War I, where men had become used to wearing belts with their uniforms Over the last century, suspenders have been in and out of fashion.. a few celebrities like Larry King wore them and fictional tv characters like Mork.... but nowadays suspenders are used primarily with formal suits and tuxedos</p>
