Julia Barretto
Description
Toxic Accountability
I recently came up with this term to describe something I've observed both in myself, in others, and in my students. I wanted to spend some time introducing this topic so that we can talk more in-depth on this topic in the future.
What is Toxic Accountability
Toxic Accountability" is having a level of personal (or external) accountability that is detrimental to oneself or those around you.

What can Toxic Accountability look like?

Verbally Berating oneself for not doing good enough, or learning a lesson

Physically hitting oneself for a similar reason

Giving up on something you love because you're not "good enough"

How do we overcome TA?

Set CLEAR and REALISTIC expectations of oneself

Winning a match or getting a certain rank isn't a real goal.

Set goals that will help you improve as a player.

Specify areas to improvement

Neutral

execution/mechanics

Strategy

Visual and/or mental focus

Vigilance

Hit-confirming

Set clear boundaries for Self-care

No insulting yourself

Only focus on issues and mistakes if you plan to do something about them.

Compliment yourself when you do things right

People often neglect this VERY IMPORTANT part of improving
