What was the occasion for the book?<br />Where was it written? Who were the original recipients? <br />What historical events surround this book?<br />What are the passages the precede or follow this text?<br />Have you asked the question “why”? Why is this happening? If something doesn’t make sense we have to take pause and ask “why?”<br />Is there anything strange happening in the text?<br />What literary form is being employed in this passage<br />Is there anything you’ve seen before or recognize from other parts of the Bible? <br />What is the overall message of this book, and how does this passage fit into that message?<br />Is it being quoted from another part of the Bible? <br />Are there words such as, “Like” or “as” to see if it’s figurative language<br />Are there any repeated words? Repeated phrases?<br />Does the author make any comparisons? Draw any contrasts? <br />Does the author raise any questions? Provide any answers? <br />Does the author point out any cause and effect relations
