39: A Behind the Scenes Look: How We Study the Bible

Join us in this episode as we take a behind the scenes tour of how we study the Bible. Consider it an all-access pass into the timeless principles we’ve used to study Scripture with our whole selves. With a new year and aspirations to sticking to our reading plans in 2020, we’ll supply helpful tools and tips to make for a vibrant and compelling study of Scripture. <br />Get a notebook or journal ready and be prepared to take this episode in two sittings, as she is a doozy.<br />Study Tips:<br />S.O.A.P.  - Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer<br />Prayer<br />“....then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures." - Luke 24:25<br />Observation:<br />What does it say? <br />How does it fit in? <br />What does it mean?<br />Application:<br />How does it apply? <br />Moving the passage from “Then and There” to “Here and Now” <br />Praying the scriptures <br />Opening with prayer and we are closing with prayer<br />Questions to ask of the Text:<br />Who is the author or speaker?<br />Why was this book written? What was the occasion for the book?<br />Where was it written? Who were the original recipients? <br />What historical events surround this book?<br />What are the passages the precede or follow this text?<br />Have you asked the question “why”? Why is this happening? If something doesn’t make sense we have to take pause and ask “why?”<br />Is there anything strange happening in the text?<br />What literary form is being employed in this passage<br />Is there anything you’ve seen before or recognize from other parts of the Bible? <br />What is the overall message of this book, and how does this passage fit into that message?<br />Is it being quoted from another part of the Bible? <br />Are there words such as, “Like” or “as” to see if it’s figurative language<br />Are there any repeated words? Repeated phrases?<br />Does the author make any comparisons? Draw any contrasts? <br />Does the author raise any questions? Provide any answers? <br />Does the author point out any cause and effect relations
