Description

Dr Charles Lane is the former head of Oxfam’s Tanzanian operation, as well as a philanthropist and an author. In the 1980s Charles lived amongst a people known as the Barabaig. Charles’ introduction to the Barabaig coincided with a transformative period in their history. They faced pressure from the Tanzanian government and from private interest groups to abandon their traditional customs, an untenable prospect for them. In addition to this, a Canadian funded wheat scheme helped itself to Barabaig land, committing various human atrocities along the way. Charles dedicated much of his early career as a philanthropist and activist to helping the Barabaig, and documenting their culture. The result was a book which Charles published in 2017 - Barabaig: Life, Love and Death on Tanzania’s Hanang Plains.

Purchase Barabaig: Life, Love and Death on Tanzania's Hanang Plains - https://www.amazon.com.au/Barabaig-Death-Tanzanias-Hanang-Plains/dp/6167339856
