Born in London, Figes studied history at Cambridge and, as a graduate student, completed archival research in the Soviet Union in the 1980s. His subsequent works include "Natasha's Dance: A Cultural History of Russia", "Crimea: The Last Crusade" and "<a href="https://us13.mailchimp.com/mctx/clicks?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.theguardian.com%2Fbooks%2F2019%2Fsep%2F07%2Fthe-europeans-making-cosmopolitan-culture-orlando-figes-review&xid=00401a5b7e&uid=57080101&iid=2f4b571267&pool=cts&v=2&c=1674408417&h=02f1be5a4203db19cf330b1f9c717aaf06e9a1aeecd068c2257e6c9e8622b15b" target="_blank">The Europeans</a>", and until recently he was a professor of history at Birkbeck College, University of London.
