He was appointed <a title="Guardian of Scotland" href= "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guardian_of_Scotland">Guardian of Scotland</a> and served until his defeat at the <a title= "Battle of Falkirk" href= "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Falkirk">Battle of Falkirk</a> in July 1298.
