The Soviet Union has fostered Russian chauvinism and racism, and Putin's propaganda unashamedly promoted it. Putin expressed a sentiment held by many. Russians view Ukrainians, Georgians, and other nations of their imagined "Russian sphere of influence" as their subjects.Ukraine is fighting for its right to exist as a country and as a nation.
