During the Gold Rush, the Southworth's travelled to California. While there, Louis discovered gold. . . with his fiddle. He was able to make almost $1,000 playing the violin -- approximately $23,000 today. That was enough money for Louis to pay off his owner and buy his own freedom from slavery.Read more
